ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is a global network working with more than 2,500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. Active in 125+ countries, we influence sustainability policy and drive local action for low emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient and circular development.
ICLEI's European Secretariat is based in Freiburg (Germany), with specialised offices in Brussels and Berlin, and a staff of more than 150 colleagues from all over Europe, covering a broad variety of professional disciplines.
We offer structured internships for students or post-students who wish to gain practical experience in an international sustainability organisation. Internships are designed as learning experiences and last between 5 and 6 months. Whenever possible, a total duration of 6 months is preferred. Fully remote internships are not foreseen.
Responsibilities
The specific learning objectives and tasks will be defined individually in a work plan at the beginning of the internship. Learning areas may include:
Supporting project teams in their daily operational tasks
Conducting research on specific thematic areas, projects or pathways
Writing project-related case studies and knowledge products
Supporting the conceptualisation and preparation of presentations
Assisting with stakeholder engagement and partner communication
Contributing to newsletters, webinars and communication activities
Screening project proposals
Supporting data collection, analysis and visualisation
Strengthening software and professional writing skills
Qualifications
Applicants must fulfil the following requirements:
External scholarship covering the full internship period (e.g. Erasmus+, DAAD or equivalent)
Willingness to relocate to Brussels, Belgium for the internship period
Visa/work permit if applicable

As interns do not receive financial remuneration, the entire internship must be covered by an external scholarship programme (e.g. Erasmus+, DAAD or equivalent).
